From the wonderful Amy Fellner Dominy:

In the same way that music captures an emotion, a mood, a theme…quotes do that for me. I’ve got notecards with quotes on the walls in my office, on my computer desk, and even by my bed. Some quotes are more traditional sayings, some I pull from music lyrics or books and movies. All of them inspire me in my life, and they inspire me as an author.

For each book I write, I pull quotes that relate to my characters and the situations they face. You can find boards for each of my novels (with quotes) on Pinterest:   Check them out and if you have favorite quotes that you think fit, let me know so I can add them!

The Fall of Grace, on the surface, is an adventure-survival story, a road-trip-romance with mystery and suspense. But at the heart of the book is a story of trust, betrayal, love and forgiveness.  Here are a few of the quotes that I pinned as I wrote this novel. They were quotes that spoke to the experience of the two main characters, Grace and Sam.  I hope you’ve never experienced betrayal, but if you have, they might speak to you, too.

Along with stealing amazing quotes from other people, I also like to come up with my own.  Occasionally there’s a line from the book, spoken by a character, which begins to feel like a tagline for the story.  This is one that stuck for The Fall of Grace.

And don’t forget to enter the contest for a chance to win a ton of books including an ARC of UNCHARTED by me, Erin Cashman, and many more! To enter, you need to know that my favorite number is 904 – (the date UNCHARTED will be published!) Add up all the favorite numbers of the authors on the red team and you’ll have all the secret code to enter for the grand prize!

Hey, before I send you guys on your way, take a moment and enter my bonus giveaway! I’m giving away a signed copy of UNCHARTED, coming 9/4/18 from Page Street/Macmillan.

Seventeen-year-old Mira has always danced to her own beat. A music prodigy in a family of athletes, she’d rather play trumpet than play ball–and with her audition to a prestigious jazz conservatory just around the corner (and her two best friends at music camp without her), she plans to spend the summer focused on jazz and nothing else.

She only goes to the warehouse party in a last-ditch effort to bond with her older sister. Instead, she falls in love with dance music, DJing… and Derek, a gorgeous promoter who thinks he can make her a star. Suddenly, trumpet practice and old friendships are taking a back seat to packed dance floors and sun-soaked music festivals, outsized personalities and endless beats.

But when a devastating tragedy plunges her golden summer into darkness, Mira discovers just how little she knows about her new boyfriend, her old friends, and even her own sister. Music brought them together. Will it also tear them apart?

How wonderful does this book sound? I can’t wait to read it!!! And, you are in for a special treat – a deleted scene from WHEN THE BEAT DROPS!!!!

My experience with makeup begins and ends with my sister Britt giving me a smokey eye for my tenth grade recital, but I’ve watched her do her own dozens of times. It can’t be hard, right? I swipe the pencil across my lid. My hand shivers and the line screeches upward, jabbing into the crease.

I swear, glance in the mirror, and swear louder. I look like a deranged mime.

A car rumbles into the driveway and my phone buzzes. Of course it’s Derek, and of course he’s here. I scrub frantically at the mime makeup with soap and water. It doesn’t budge.

“What’s wrong with you?” I scream, squinting at the eye pencil through the soap that’s trickled into my eye. Its small lettering swims into focus. Waterproof. Great.

Be right there, I text Derek with one hand while throwing Britt’s cosmetics all over the bathroom with the other, looking for eye makeup remover. When I can’t find any I hobble-jog, squinting, to the downstairs bathroom where Mom keeps her stuff. I grab a small bottle labeled Eye Makeup Remover and dump it directly onto my skin, rubbing with my fingers. The line finally fades, leaving an oily patch around one bloodshot eye.

Coming? Derek texts from my driveway.

One minute!

Soap and water bring the oil down to a dull sheen but there’s nothing I can do about the scarlet veins on my eyeball. I’m just going to have to meet the hottest guy ever looking like I got stabbed in the eye with a fork.

I’m running excuses through my head (“I had an allergic reaction to bananas.” “I got stabbed in the eye with a fork”) when I spot Dad’s Ray-Bans on the kitchen table on my way out. Perfect. I nestle them over my nose, even though the sun has already gone down and I can barely see with them on. Half-blind, I step into the driveway, locking the door behind me.

“Sunglasses at night, huh?” Derek opens the door of a two-tone Chevy Astro, releasing a blast of intricate downtempo trip-hop. “You’re even cooler than I thought.”

“You’re ripping on my sunglasses? Check out your ride.”

The van looks like it drove here straight from the 1990s. The upholstery sags, the dashboard is fake wood, and the bucket seats up front are the only ones that haven’t been ripped out. The entire back is a jumble of sound equipment, posters, and random bolts of fabric.

“Damn right.” Derek shoots me a half-grin that turns my insides to molasses. “This thing is half moving truck, half VIP lounge, and all class. So, where to?”

And don’t forget to enter the contest for a chance to win a ton of books including an ARC of UNCHARTED by me, Erin Cashman, and many more!
